The ALS course aims to train candidates to identify the causes of cardiac arrest, recognize patients in danger of deterioration, and manage both the cardiac arrest and the ‘peri-arrest’ problems encountered in the first hour or so after initial resuscitation from a cardiac arrest.
The ERC’s ALS provider course is a standardized European course that teaches healthcare professionals evidence-based resuscitation guidelines and skills. It aims to train candidates to identify the causes of cardiac arrest, recognize patients in danger of deterioration, and manage both the cardiac arrest and the ‘peri-arrest’ problems encountered in the first hour or so after initial resuscitation from a cardiac arrest.
Course structure and program
ALS courses are held at centers throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East. They are approved and certified by the European Resuscitation Council. This ensures uniformity of content and standards regardless of the center.
The course comprises:
- Workshops
- Skill stations
- Lectures
- Cardiac arrest simulation (CAS) training
Knowledge is assessed through a multiple-choice question paper, while practical skills are evaluated through continuous assessment and a simulated cardiac arrest test. Successful candidates receive an ALS provider certificate.
The multidisciplinary nature of the course encourages efficient teamwork. By training together, all ALS providers can gain experience as both resuscitation team members and team leaders.
Encourage medical students, nurses, and other healthcare providers who may find this course beyond their training needs to take the Immediate Life Support (ILS) course. Those with a keen interest in resuscitation can attend an ALS provider course. In some cases, final year medical students can also be accepted as candidates for an ALS course.
